Read a Good Book?Points of View An Anthology of Short Stories review by Susie Glennan on The Busy Woman thebusywoman.com

When was the last time you read a good book, just for fun? I’m not talking about a self-help book or something that teaches you or trains you. I’m talking about a book that transports you to a different place or time.

There was required reading while I was back in college. One of the books I purchased for English was “Points of View.” It’s the one you see in the picture. I finally have a reason to read short stories. Many of the ones in Points of View are set in the 1800’s to early 1900’s. I had forgotten how fun it is to read! It’s so nice to get whisked away into a good story.

The last story we read was “First Confession,” by Frank O’Connor. When the grandfather passed away, the foul grandmother moved in. In the meantime, poor little Jackie, who is a boy by the way, was tormented by his big sister, Nora. Then, the grandmother showed favoritism to Nora. Talk about adding insult to injury. This caused a divide in the family. There was team mother and Jackie, and team father and Nora. The father always took Nora’s side and the mother took Jackie’s. Then of course there is Mrs. Ryan, another nasty person who has a place in the story. Thankfully, there’s also a kind priest. I won’t share all of the details, but it went from grrrrrr to awwwww, to Haha, in an unexpected ending.

It’s interesting to see in two of the stories I read, how the author’s mention the covert behavior – nature of girls. It never occurred to me, that author’s of days gone by, would even notice yet alone mention these things. I guess I never really paid much attention until now.

It’s so nice to get away into a story. I can’t wait to get to the two longer stories. What about you? Read any good books lately?

I haven’t read for pleasure in a long, long time. I homeschool so I read a lot for that, I read the Bible in a year every year so that’s more reading and my dh and I have been doing some research so that’s a LOT of reading. Plus I write for my blog each week which, as you know, requires reading, re reading and tweaking. Just don’t have the time.

The last time I read for pleasure was about 4 or 5 years ago. It started out as a way to try to bond with the ladies at work and ended up being a joy to read.
