Have You Looked Around Your Home Lately?
Since most of us are stuck inside, it might be a good time to look around your home for paper clutter you do not use, need, or are taking up space.
Since the dreaded pandemic hit and I was stuck in the house more often, I couldn’t help but see the clutter that I hadn’t seen before. When I was honest with myself, I realized that I do not and probably will never use or refer to all the binders of paper in my office. Most of it is training and educational materials for real estate and sales.
Assess What To Keep
While I’m still working from home, I am no longer gallivanting about like I usually do and therefore have a little extra time on my hands. Today, I was thinking about the massive amount of paper clutter in my bins, on my shelves, and in my office. Quite a bit was given to me during my real estate training, and some are notes and training for other areas of life and business.
I just kept filing what I received because, then, it would be organized. Also, I thought I’d be going through the notes, following every step, and referring back to the pages. Sadly, there are probably two or three reams of paper in binders or containers that are unused clutter. In over two years, I have not referred back to any of it even once.
While I have them all organized and labeled, the amount of paper is overwhelming.
Give, Shred, & Move On
So, what did I do? I went through it and phoned a friend who may need the training materials. She said she wants them and asked me to keep them for her until she is ready. They are now packed in a box with her name on it.
(Update: The papers have been delivered to their new home!)
If I need any of the information in the future, I can repurchase it or download it for free. Besides, how often do we save educational or training information only to realize that there is newer information available when needed?
There is not much I cannot get online. So, I blocked time to shred or toss. And trust me, I had to get tough with myself because I tend to hold onto certain things.
What do you have taking up space that you haven’t referred to, used, or really don’t need? Can you think of someone else who can use it? If not, is the space it’s taking up or the visual clutter worth keeping?
You decide, and then, let me know in the comments below.
Is there an area in your home you are struggling with? How can I help?
Until next time…
