Journal Entry 7-11-14
Today I was bouncing around and reading on equip.org. During my reading, it hit me… God has been teaching me patience so that I finally come to Him to learn – LEARN God’s Word. He is guiding me to asking the right questions to learn and then share with others.
When you are new to learning God’s Word or you have never been taught how to study the bible, a little help is needed.
In November 2013, I connected with a new friend, Bree and ended up joining the Thanksgiving Good Morning Girls bible study, Now: Love God Greatly. It was very interesting how we met. I recall seeing posts on Facebook. I think it was from another friend. Either she friended Bree or shared her post. There was a sequence of events over a month or so that lead Bree to lovingly invite and welcome me into her online bible study.
I expressed to her that I want to get out of the house and do something worthwhile. I was NOT patient. I was frustrated, and felt that I was not being productive or of value to others. Several times she told me, “Reading the Word is never a waste of time. You are right where God wants you to be.” And finally, I took that to heart.
It is never a waste of time to learn God’s Word. ~Susie Glennan
SOAP Method
This is when I first learned about the SOAP[1] bible study method. In wondering how I met Bree, I started looking for my old SOAPs from when we met. Guess what? I wrote them directly into the group comment boxes instead of in a MS Word doc. The groups have since been deleted and now my journal entries are gone. I’m kind of sad, but now I’ve learned, so I’m sharing this with my online bible study group and you. If you write something meaningful online, make sure to write it somewhere else so you’ll have it in the future.
By going through these journaling exercises and methods of studying, I realized that I could sit and study the Word all day. I’ve been craving it for so many years, but didn’t have the time (take the time) as often as I wanted, to learn God’s Word in a way that helps me remember what I read. THIS is a way to help me learn — STUDY with others and SOAP!
