Step Out of Your Own Way
Back in the 1980’s, I sold cars. I wasn’t a “typical” car saleswoman. When I went to purchase a car, I wasn’t treated very well. So, I applied for a job on a car lot to change things. (I was 18 yrs old.) Within a few months, I sent cards to everyone I met to build relationships. There were only a couple of us sending cards. It was the thank you, birthday cards, and heartfelt wishes I sent that started me on the road to referrals and big money for a teenager.
Move ahead to 2003/2004, I was invited to join SendOutCards on the ground floor. I did not join because I did NOT get it. I was too caught up in my own business to see how something else could help me and passed on the opportunity.
Honesty
I did not want to be a network marketing pro. I did not want to sign up for SendOutCards (SOC) as a distributor. I tried many direct sales and network marketing businesses in the past. While I did well in direct sales, I did not do well in network marketing. Yet, here I am having the TIME OF MY LIFE making people feel good for a living and making money! Who would have thought? Not me I can tell you.
I think I get it
In 2012, I forgot to send my father a card for his birthday. He said he wasn’t upset but I could tell he was. In the meantime, my friend kept talking about send out cards and sending me cards and gifts. I kept telling her not to waste her money on me. LOL Her last-ditch effort was to give me a gift account that amounted to the cost of a card and brownies to send to my father in 2013 so I could redeem myself.
I scheduled the card and brownies to go out in time for dad’s birthday. He loved them and has requested them every year since! THAT is when I signed up for SendOutCards — as a customer. I signed up for the retail subscription in August 2013.
By December 2013 I needed a lot more points to send holiday cards to all of our friends we reconnected with at a high school reunion. I bumped myself up to the preferred subscription to get the best price point.
Awesome Sauce!
It was then 2014 and I was getting amazing feedback from people who received cards from me! I told those who loved the cards to contact the person who got me started. However, my friend encouraged me to sign up so I could reap the rewards. I did, but only as a distributor. I didn’t get the discounted marketing bundle with all the bells and whistles.
In the meantime, I sent mom dark chocolate caramels and she flipped over them! (She promised to save me one for when I visited a week later, but that never happened.) I tried to get her to sign up as a customer, but by then her eyesight had started failing so she wasn’t using her computer anymore. I sent brownies to my physical therapist and tried to get him to sign up. That didn’t happen either.
My heart wasn’t in it and I still didn’t quite “get it.” A few months went by and I forgot that I signed up as a distributor. Before I get to the next paragraph, let me explain that I was in several direct sales and Network Marketing companies in the past. However, these two types of businesses seemed very different to me. One had tangible products I’d order wholesale and sell retail. Easy peasy.
I even OWNED a direct sales company…The Busy Woman’s Daily Planner©, but THAT is a story for another day. 😉
AhHA!
I heard that the SendOutCards convention was going to be held at Disneyland and many of my online friends, of many years, were going to be there, including my dear friend who signed me up! And I reeeaaaalllyyyy wanted to go to Disneyland! My husband said to just DO IT, but I hadn’t had success in Network Marketing before…or so I thought. I called a friend of mine and ran my thoughts (and fears) past her and she said, “DO IT! I’ll sign up under you. I love SOC!” So I did.
But this time, I signed up with marketing bundle. As they processed my order they said, “Susie…You already have a distributor in your down line! They signed up about 20 minutes ago!” The friend I mentioned above was the sign-up. Right away, I made back half of my investment!
Months later, I had made a profit and had a blast!
What changed?
My mindset!!! I believed in the founder’s mission and values. I made up my mind that I was ALL IN and I saw awesome results! Mindset matters.
My mindset also made me stay loyal after my time with Send Out Cards had come and gone. You see, they did what they should have done and made big upgrades. Sadly, they started taking the company in a different direction, thereby removing things I loved.
It took a side by side comparison between Send Out Cards and Mailbox Power to realize I was spending on average .37 cents more per card. I needed simple and less expensive and I FOUND IT!
So I’m inviting you to come join me at Mailbox Power…

TESTIMONIALS
#1 Susie, my heart is overwhelmed. Thank you so much for the beautiful card and the delicious gift. What kind, sweet gesture…thank you!!!! It was a beautiful gift…so encouraging and delightful! Barb
#2 GV: Thank you soooo much! The card is great and made well. You just sold me on this site. You have the biggest heart and it feels good to receive the love. Much appreciated {heart emoticon} Again Thank You
And OMG! The brownies were so rich, I ate 1/4 of 1. Many happy days to come. Yes you are right, I did get away from sending cards. I just picked out a card for a neighbor who is moving to Florida that I knew since I was 10. I enclosed a packet of seeds (forget-me-nots) I would never have thought of that myself! Can’t thank you enough! GV
#3 Thank you so much for the birthday card. It was so nice to open an actual envelope!
#4 Thank you SO much for this wonderful card! It made me cry, but brings me joy. So thoughtful!!! Ellen
~ How many times have you heard of someone’s loss or wanted to send congratulations but had to go out and find a card?
~ How long did it take before you did it?
~ Or did you do it–at all?
When someone is going through a rough time or has something wonderful happen, I want to be able to stop and send them a card (and gift) right then and there. –Susie
That is a great idea! But I mostly had to write because I used to sell cars too. But I was terrible at it. I am NOT a sales person and my Direct Sales days are over. I will share your post 🙂
Thanks for the note April! I posted a reply last year but for some reason it didn’t show up.
